We seem to recall just after our AGM in 2007, asking the question was this our best AGM yet? Well the question has to be asked again, because things just seem to get better!
Members viewing the stands at AGM 08 At the last count, we made it over 100 people in attendance - surely the most EVER! we were off to a flying start electing our officers and committee, which after the grim prospects of our announcement last January, has actually taken us to one of the strongest positions in the Societies history with 10 now forming the committee that will take us into 2009 and hopefully well beyond!
Pensby Library stand with lots of info about what on at the library This was immediately followed by our 'Video Review of the Year', with a slightly changed format on the previous years. There was lots to tell with all the events of White's farm, Lee Farm, Thurstaston Common, Wirral Country Park Wind Turbine, Thingwall Road traffic calming, Hillbark House marquee besides much more. The video review, whilst extremely time consuming to produce, keeps our evening to a fairly strict timetable. Lasting about half an hour, there was sufficient to update members as to the goings on in our area over the last 12 months.
Jon Twigg from the National Trust with their stand displaying information about the proposed fencing on the northern most part of the common Our guests certainly made it an evening of much variety, with displays from The Wirral Society, Wirral Green Belt Council, Wirral Footpaths & Open Spaces Preservations Society, The National Trust, Pensby Library, Wirral & Cheshire Badger Group and of course we thought we'd better have our own stand too!
Members browsing the Wirral Green Belt Council stand The natural break followed where everyone was able to take a browse round the stands and see what other groups were up to and even make donations or become members if they so wished. More importantly of course, we could get a hot or cold drink with some biscuits thanks to the girls from Pensby Interact Club. This is a group of young people who are linked in to the local Rotary Club of North Wirral who meet at The Heatherlands every Monday. The girls didn't make a charge, but simply asked for a donation from which they raised almost £40
Members of Pensby Interact Club preparing refreshments Then we had our guest speaker for the 'Summer Talk' Professor Stephen Harding provided an excellent talk on his proposed heritage trail for Wirral and gave us an insight into some local land marks that demonstrated some of the historic importance of Irby, Thurstaston, Pensby and beyond. Thankfully, the WBC Rights of Way officer was present and as a result they are now in touch with each other, so watch this space for details of a possible Viking Heritage trail coming to Wirral.
ITPAS Chairman with Professor Harding just before he gives his talk Finally, after questions & answers for Professor Harding, we held a raffle for the Interact Club funds. This raised in excess of £60 which was great news for them as they seek to raise more funds for good causes. Before departing though, attendees were able to purchase a copy of some of Prof Hardings books about Viking Wirral at 50% off the cover RRP! we would like to thank Prof. Harding for donating 100% of the proceeds of these books between ITPAS and the Interact club.
