The purpose of the Society is clearly defined in our Constitution, but in simple terms our aims and objectives are:-
Clearly we do not exist with the intention of opposing all planning applications. If we can, we will work with others to be constructive and considerate in all in their applications or proposals for alteration and/or change of use of land and property. Most of our area is surrounded by protected Greenbelt land, we are amongst some of the only 'official' Greenbelt in the UK outside of the Greater London area. As such we are affiliated to the Wirral Greenbelt Council - another group of professional volunteers who thankfully, rigidly monitor planning applications and usage of Greenbelt land. Much of this Greenbelt is designated as 'Area of Special Landscape Value' and/or 'Site of Special Scientific Interest' (SSSI) and/or Site of 'Local Biological Importance'. Most of Thurstaston is an existing 'Conservation Area' and we have four 'Sites of Archaeological Importance'. Such areas include Heswall Hills, Thurstaston, the National Trust owned Harrock Wood and the more popular Thurstaston Common, one of the best examples of "lowland heathland" in the UK where rare heathers & gorse grow in abundance. Towards the River Dee we have Wirral Country Park and Thurstaston Beach. Running straight through our area is 'The Wirral Way' Country Park, a disused railway line since the early 1960's, now a footpath, cycle & bridleway stretching from West Kirby to Hooton flourishing with wildlife and fauna. These facts alone makes one realise why we value our surrounding area and why we are one of the few fortunate areas in the UK with an 'Amenity Society' having a healthy membership ready to challenge any threats to our surrounding beautiful landscape Because of the unique nature of our surrounding landscape, ITPAS exists to work with the Local Authority and other appropriate bodies to Preserve & Protect.
