A sad loss...
January 2009 - Its now official, the decision was taken last week (15th January 2009) to close IRBY LIBRARY as of 31st March 2009! Whilst the library at Pensby appears safe for now, our appointed representatives have now put the axe where they have wanted to put it for many years. We cannot recall a year gone by where the topic wasn't mooted by someone or other at Wirral Borough Council. This long standing piece of history will now be no longer. We look back at the efforts of both staff and ITPAS to keep this useful amenity running in Irby village. The coffee mornings, story reading for children, bulb planting and the promotions at our AGM. All in vain apparently - but who is really responsible for allowing this stage to have been reached? - The Councilors and Council Officials for penny pinching? or is it the Community at large for failing to use the facility? Despite many protestations by ITPAS and our close involvement with the library over the years, some of the loudest voices were only heard in the twilight of its existence, perhaps too late. The BIG question now of course is one we asked some weeks ago. What will become of the building and surrounding land? Is this to be sold off or can it be retained for the benefit of the Community? - Well, lets wait and see, perhaps all is not lost!!.....
