December 2008 - It doesn't seem that long ago that we were working with both libraries at Irby & Pensby and local school children, planting tens of thousands of bulbs in the grounds. This was just one activity of many that appeared to keep the libraries flourishing with activities involving both young and old.
Such activities kept the libraries active and served our communities well, whether it was storytime for the children or coffee mornings for charity, they have been just that - a focal point for the community.
Both libraries have put on displays at our last two AGM's. These displays have been full of information about whats gone on and what on at the library. This demonstrated that despite some opinions, they were used, they were used well and staff were kept busy with projects designed to generate interest from residents.
The recent announcement by WBC to close these two libraries in order to make way for refurbished facilities in the bigger communes does not bode well for a population where the interests of both the young and the elderly (a large part of the population in Irby) are at threat - not just from the libraries closing of course....
This is yet another nail in the Coffin for village life. Over the last 10 years we have seen local businesses close down, giving way to either derelict buildings or the infamous fast food chains. Wirral Borough Council have not helped of course and many would say the silence from our local councillors has been deafening! The latest 'scam' in Irby village is the allowing of a kebab/Pizza takeaway that remains open until after midnight most nights! Lets not forget of course the pulling of the Christmas lights leaving a dark Christmas for the local shopping areas and businesses fighting the strongest of competition.
What is the long term game plan then we ask? What on earth do our elected representatives and civil servants hope to achieve for our small communes? The perceived enemy of local trade, having spent years and tens of thousands £'s on trying to remove Doctors surgeries away from the village and now our libraries - what will become of the buildings - demolition, dereliction or maybe a block of flats for people to live, not so close to local amenities!
Unfortunately, ITPAS cannot answer any of these questions. So, we ask you to write to them by letter or email. List your objections strongly, if you object of course (we would like to hear from you if you don't!) Ask what is to become of the building - I'm sure it hasn't been thought through as The Warrens site was and still is not thought through properly! Of course, we would be grateful if you let us know about your objections and more importantly, the response you receive - if any! Click here to email us
