January 2008 - You may or may not be aware that proposals have been put forward by WBC to have Traffic calming measures placed along Thingwall Road & Thingwall Road East, Irby. ITPAS first put forward proposals for traffic calming over 10 years ago, but only for the immediate vicinity of Irby Village! The closest we came was the installation of the 'Puffin' crossing that now exists in the village, but we wanted to go further with 20mph speed limits and rumble strips. Most members will be aware that over the years, ITPAS have made suggestions to various bodies for ways to improve our area. One of the first was the suggestion of a set of traffic lights at Fishers Lane in Pensby. The idea was rejected, but now what do we have? Back in 1997 we asked for traffic calming measures to be placed in Irby Village. This included the placing of rumble strips, road narrowing and 20mph mandatory speed limit. We were told that none were possible, yet a few years ago, rumble strips were placed on Mill Hill Road on the approach to the village. Eventually the present 'Puffin' crossing was placed to help with the situation. Now we have proposals for speed cushions and traffic calming measures for Thingwall Road & Thingwall Road East. However, the plans stop just short of Irby Village.
Speed cushions and lane narrowing are proposed for the full length of Thingwall Road East & Thingwall Road stopping just short of Irby Village
The proposals are for the full length of Thingwall Road / East - virtually all the way to Thingwall corner. This will include the installation of speed cushions like the ones in the below photo's. Similar schemes have been in existence for sometime in neighbouring boroughs.
The proposed speed cushions are similar to the one's in the above photo's except there would be three cushions across the road not two as shown in the photo's
Additionally, the proposals will include chicane style speed reductions along the route to create positive action in reducing the speed of traffic at all times on Thingwall Road. As far as we are aware, there is no indication in the plans to have the mandatory 20mph speed limit that usually comes with traffic calming measures.
The 'build outs' would be similar to the one in the above photo, but would be more of an island allowing for a small cycle lane cutting through
As far as we can tell, the plans do not exist on the WBC website and consultation has been limited to only those residents of Thingwall Road / East! However ITPAS has the following information from the plans....
Build out near to No. 38 Thingwall Road
What do you think about it? Well firstly, you need to see exactly what the proposals are. Pop along to Irby library and have a look. For the library opening hours click here. As far as we can tell, the plans are not available on the WBC website. Once you have a good idea of what the proposals actually are, then click here to contact us.
The ITPAS committee will be holding an emergency meeting imminently about the proposal, so please let us know what YOU think be it good, bad or indifferent. We need to hear as many members views as possible. Not a member? then Join Us.
In the meantime, ITPAS have written to Councillors Gardiner, Quinn & Reisdorf about seeking more time for greater public consultation as there are many issues to discuss and as many valid points have been made so far against the proposals as have for them, so please do email us. or click on our quick survey in the right hand margin.
If you wish to make any observations about the proposals, you should write directly to the Local Authority at the below mentioned address prior to 7th February...
Corporate Services Dept or you can phone Street Scene on 606 2004
February 2008 - We have now posted two further articles about arguments FOR and AGAINST the proposals. Read them both before you make your mind up, then take part in our quick survey and post a comment on our 'Your Voice' Forum
